- Lady Helena Lynchcliffe is very much the imposing female character. Deceptively fragile she has real steel nerve. She reminds me a bit of Gina McKee (pictured left) in The Forsyte saga). Lady Helena is deeply in love with her husband and adores her adult children Michael & Sarah. Despite her initial resentment at Margaret’s intrusion into her family life Helena quickly becomes fond of her niece and aware of Margaret’s passion for Franklin.
Lady Helena faces tough times but she gets through them and in Vol 2 her sensuality returns with a vengeance when Dr Hamish George kisses her.
Sarah Lynchcliffe has political ideas which get her into trouble in vol 1 when she sneaks off to join a suffrage demonstration. Her father’s death puts John Flagg in her sights and she thinks she has found love’s young dream which is cruelly shattered in Vol 2 with tragic consequences
Margaret Trevelyan is the feisty cuckoo in first the Trevelyan then the Lynchcliffe nest. An educated attractive young woman with a real spark about her she soon weaves a spell over Franklin as she knows she wants him from the first time they meet. Her spark and sudden flashes of temper arouse him and finally he is able to win her for his own but the romance did not end with their wedding as the next book shows.
Jane Halliwell the cook at first appears to be moralistic and the bane of people’s lives especially bitchy malicious kitchen maid Katie but the outbreak of war and Jenkins falling ill in vol w2 bring her to her senses as she realises she could have lost the man she truly loves. Not exactly a feisty romantic heroine Jane is nonetheless dependable
Irene Lambert has been Margaret’s friend for years and came with her to Lynchcliffe Park following the Trevelyan’s deaths on RMS Titanic. She did her best to fix things up between Margaret and Franklin as she knows they were made for each other and she also knows the secret of Margaret;s origins. She becomes a shoulder for Michael to cry on following Marcus’ death and a comfort through dark days of war but this is another romance that will not finish when they say “I do.
